PA Volunteers Preparing to Open Firefighter-Themed Distillery

June 15, 2018
Two Longtime firefighters are moving forward with plans to open the Hook and Irons Distillery in Carlisle.

Two longtime volunteer firemen plan to open Carlisle’s first distillery.

Boiling Springs residents Mark Farrell and Devin Flickinger are finalizing the financing to purchase a building at 137 N. Hanover St. as the future home of Hook and Irons Distillery.

“We’re really trying to bring craft distillery action to Carlisle,” Farrell said.

Farrell said the partners expect to settle on the building at the end of the month.

“Everything hinges on that,” he said.

After settlement, equipment can be ordered and the licensing process can get underway. Farrell anticipates opening by the end of this year or in early 2019.

Farrell said they will be starting with a smaller still and working with another distillery to help them get off the ground. They will also focus on using local grains as much as possible.

When it opens, Hook and Irons Distillery will be open Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday to start and will offer distillery tours. Though it will not have a full restaurant, it will have a full bar so Farrell hopes visitors will have dinner at one of the downtown restaurants before coming to Hook and Irons for drinks and entertainment.

Reminiscent of fire company patches, the distillery’s logo reflects Farrell and Flickinger’s history as volunteer firefighters while hinting at the local fire history that will be incorporated into the theme for the bar.

The addition would build on the borough’s growing profile as a destination point for restaurants and craft beverages, and Farrell said they are excited to be part of the redevelopment effort in Carlisle that includes projects at the former Masland/IAC site as well as a renewed focus by the borough on North Hanover Street as a connector between the downtown and those new developments.

Hook and Irons Distillery will join New Cumberland’s Dead Lightning as the only craft distilleries in Cumberland County.
