PHOENIX (AP) -- Firefighters were battling a blaze Monday just outside the Four Peaks Wilderness area, about 40 miles east of Phoenix.
The Fox fire was sparked by lightning Saturday and had consumed more than 1,000 acres by Sunday night, said Tonto National Forest spokesman Dave Killebrew.
It was burning in a remote location about six miles west of Highway 188, Killebrew said.
No structures were threatened and the fire was moving away from inhabited areas, he said. The nearest structures were about six miles away at the Cholla Campground, and the closest homes were about 8 miles away.
More than 150 firefighters were working on the blaze Sunday, Killebrew said. Fire managers had requested additional crews to bring the number of firefighters to 275 by Monday, he said.
