SALINAS, Calif. (AP) -- A brush fire that was sparked by falling power lines had burned about 1,000 acres in a mostly rural area near Salinas by Thursday morning.
About 200 firefighters spent Wednesday night and Thursday morning battling the fire about 10 miles south of Salinas, said Curt Itson, a battalion chief with the California Department of Forestry.
By daybreak Thursday, the fire was 75 percent contained and Itson said he expected the fire to be fully contained by Thursday night. Cool, damp air flowing in from the sea was helping firefighters contain the blaze, Itson said.
The fire was first reported around 4:30 p.m. Wednesday.
It broke out after a large tree limb fell on power lines in the area of Chualar Canyon Road in south Monterey County, Itson said.
By Thursday morning, no homes or homes or structures had been burned, and nobody had been injured.
