Nov. 11, 2014
A large pile of scrap was burning when Rocky Mount firefighters arrived and water tenders were called to battled the fire.

Four departments were needed to contain a Nov. 5 fire at a Rocky Mount recycling plant.

At 11:30 a.m. Rocky Mount Engine Companies 1, 3. 4 and 6, Rescue 2 and Battalion 2 were dispatched to the 800 block of S. Halifax Road for a structure fire at a recycling plant.

Engine 1 was a mile away and reported that they could see a large column of smoke in the area. Upon arrival they reported that they had a large pile of scrap metal on fire that was being processed for recycling next to a large recycling building.

Battalion 2 assumed command and requested tanker assignments from Nash County due to no nearby hydrants. Mutual aid Companies came from West Mount, Red Oak and Coopers fire departments.

Rocky Mount Units began fighting the blaze with the water they were carrying.

Drop tanks were set up and a water shuttle was utilized.

Due to the type of contents that was on fire a decision was made to use foam.  Firefighters used 15 cans of foam to help extinguish the blaze.

It took firefighters about 80 minutes to confine the fire.

Firefighters remained on the scene for another two hours overhauling and picking up.

According to the company operation manager there was no major damage done to the structure.

Nash County EMS Units were on the scene providing rehab.
