Just before 10 a.m. on Sept. 13, several calls to 9-1-1 reported a house fire on Merrick Road and Essex Circle in Shirley.

The rear of the two-story house was fully engulfed when Brookhaven Fire Chief Thomas Connors (5-3-30) arrived.

A large explosion was heard early in the incident, and officials believe it was from the BLEVE of a 100-pound propane tank.

Mutual aid was from Bellport, Center Moriches, Hagerman, Mastic, Mastic Beach, North Bellport, Ridge and others.
