Firehouse presents recent fires from around the country.

Lansford, PA, Feb. 2, 2018—Firefighters worked to contain a stubborn fire on a windy night in a row of homes on East Abbott Street in Lansford, PA. First-arriving crews found smoke showing from the row and requested a second alarm followed by a third alarm and special calls. These alarms brought units from throughout Carbon and Eastern Schuylkill counties and as far away as Mahanoy City. Firefighters eventually had to evacuate and used a master stream from Coaldale Tower 40-24 to knock down the bulk of the fire.

Albany, NY, Feb. 23, 2018—Shortly before 6 a.m., multiple calls were received for a working structure fire at the Wendy's fast food restaurant in the Colonie Village Fire District. Colonie EMS arrived on the scene and advised visible flames showing from the roof. Daytime mutual-aid companies included Midway FD (Truck 7) Fuller Road FD (Truck 3) and Shaker Road FD (E 449). Although crews made an initial interior attack, they were pulled out as fire conditions rapidly worsened, possibly from a ruptured gas line within the structure. Aerial operations commenced with master streams darkening down the fire. After most visible fire was knocked down, crews began overhaul and put out hot spots.

Fair Lawn, NJ, Feb. 10, 2018—At 11:28 p.m., a general alarm was dispatched for a reported structure fire. Arriving chiefs found heavy smoke showing from a one-story home. A second-alarm was struck, bringing to the scene a FAST team from Saddle Brook as well as companies from Elmwood Park, Hawthorne, Paramus and Glen Rock to cover at firehouses. The fire was determined to be in the basement. Quint 2 stretched lines into the basement and first floor. The fire worked its way to the first floor of the home, pushing heavy smoke. Eventually, heavy fire vented out the front of the home.

Fisherville, PA, Feb. 9, 2018—The Fisherville Volunteer Fire Company—along with several mutual-aid companies—responded to a reported structure fire in a single-wide-style structure with flames coming from the front door. Crews stretched lines and began putting a heavy knock on the fire load at the front door. As crews began an aggressive attack through the interior, a chief advised crews of fire starting to breach the B/C corner, so firefighters opened a window on the B side.

Fall River, MA, Feb. 2, 2018—Crews were called to a three-alarm fire at a hardware store. Firefighters made an aggressive interior attack but were unable to find the seat of the fire and had to be evacuated. The fireground went defensive, and firefighters were able to save the surrounding dwellings less than 5 feet away.

Oxford, MA, Feb. 14, 2018—A National Grid employee saw smoke emanating from an occupied dwelling and stopped to check. As the worker knocked on the door, a possible backdraft occurred, blowing off a side door. The homeowners were not home at the time, but two dogs ran out after the explosion. Firefighters were hampered by a weakened second floor as they pushed up the stairs. The fire extended from first floor and through the roof, and a second alarm was requested to the scene.

Leominster, MA, Feb. 4, 2018—Firefighters arrived on the scene to find a three-story wood-frame dwelling with heavy fire showing. Firefighters searched the building and determined all occupants were out. Crews advanced lines into the building to begin knocking down the flames, but with the fire still advancing in the cockloft, the chief evacuated the building. As the tones went out, a mayday was called by the lieutenant of Engine 2. The crew was making their way out when the lieutenant realized his nozzleman wasn't behind him. The nozzlemean had become caught up in the line, but was able to free himself and bail out down the stairs and eventually get outside. Numerous handlines, deck guns and blitz guns were used to knock down the fire.
