Firehouse presents recent fires from around the country.

Jersey City, NJ, April 23, 2018—Jersey City firefighters were toned out to a report of a house on fire. Crews arrived to find heavy smoke showing from the first floor of a vacant structure. Firefighters tried to make an aggressive attack on the fire, but by the time they were able to access the interior, the fire had extended throughout the building. Firefighters were soon battling flames on all floors and into the cockloft. Crews put big lines into operation to knock down the flames.

Chicago, April 25, 2018—Crews responded to a fire at a records building/chapel in a large cemetery. The Schiller Park engine provided the sole water supply, a 2½-inch line and a large-diameter hose. The fire consumed the entire roof and attic area and was ultimately contained by a tower ladder stream from Norwood Park.

Hinsdale, IL, April 11, 2018—Dozens of firefighters responded to the three-alarm fire in a sprawling mansion-type home that was built in 1899. The first 9-1-1 call reported a porch fire at the home known locally as “American Beauty.” Crews found fire from the basement to the roof of the three-story home that measured approximately 100 by 125 feet. Fire officials said the balloon-frame construction allowed the fire to spread throughout the walls. The three-alarm fire, which brought firefighters from a dozen departments, was placed under control within about three hours.

Lodi, NJ, April 22, 2018—Lodi and Garfield units were dispatched to a fire in a condominium building containing five units. Heavy fire was showing from the rear of the building extending from the first floor to the roof. Additional mutual aid was called as lines were stretched and put into operation. Conditions deteriorated, forcing crews to back out the interior lines. Heavy fire broke through the roof. Two elevated master streams and numerous handlines knocked down the fire, and companies were able to re-enter, but were withdrawn again due to questionable structural integrity. The fire was placed under control in less than two hours.
