“Big Room” sessions

Firehouse World offers critical information about some of the hottest topics in the fire service through its “Big Room” sessions.

In his session “Managing the Turnaround of the Detroit Fire Department,” Detroit Fire Department Deputy Commissioner Dave Fornell looks back at the city’s rocky history, including filing the largest municipal bankruptcy in history in 2013. Fornell outlines how the team used data, internal information and common sense to overcome the difficulties, and shares practical concepts that departments of any size can adopt to their own situations.

Another “Big Room” session will tackle the response to one of the most significant wildfires in California history: CAL FIRE Deputy Director Michael Mohler will share feedback from the destructive Camp Fire in Northern California.

And don’t miss these fire service sites that are sure to be at the top of any firefighter’s list of must-see Los Angeles attractions:

·       Los Angeles County Fire Museum, Bellflower: The LA County Fire Museum is home to Engine 51 and Squad 51, made famous in the popular TV show Emergency! While these apparatus are central to the museum’s display, there are also horse-drawn and more modern-day rigs, as well as thousands of photographs and artifacts relating to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. Note: Squad 51 will be on display at Firehouse World (booth 1255) during exhibit hall days.

·       Los Angeles Fire Department Museum—Old Fire Station 27, Hollywood (lafdmuseum.org): For decades, Fire Station 27 was the largest fire station west of the Mississippi, serving Hollywood, the motion picture studios, the stars who lived in the hills and along Sunset Boulevard, and during major emergencies, the entire
city at large. Today, Old Fire Station 27 serves as a museum, with three apparatus bays filled with equipment, some dating back to the early-1800s. In addition, artifacts and equipment of all types are on display, dating from the 1880s through present day. It is also the site of the LAFD Fallen Firefighters Memorial.

·       Los Angeles Fire Department Harbor Museum—“Old 36s,” San Pedro (lafdmuseum.org): At the southern-most tip of Los Angeles, San Pedro is home to the Los Angeles Harbor, Ports ‘O Call Village, and some of the most unique seascapes in the LA area. Housed in one of the oldest buildings in San Pedro, Old Fire Station 36 features LAFD harbor-related exhibits, LAFD apparatus, including the original Engine 36 that came to the station when it opened in 1928, as well as artifacts from the San Pedro area and some of the most famous fires in this part of the city. The LAFD National Historic Landmark Fireboat No. 2—"The Ralph J. Scott,” which served the Port of Los Angeles for 78 years—is currently being restored.

·       Station 127: The fire station featured in Emergency!, Station 127 is located in Carson, CA, and includes memorabilia from the show.

If you’re looking for some non-fire service attractions, Los Angeles has more than a few options, like the Santa Monica Pier and Beach, the Hollywood Walk of Fame, the Hollywood Sign, Griffith Observatory and Disneyland.
