LOUISVILLE, KY, OCT. 5—Nearly 200 responders from 25 agencies participated in a triennial Federal Aviation Administration-required exercise at Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport. The scenario of the exercise involved an unauthorized crossing of a runway by a maintenance vehicle that ultimately headed into the path of an aircraft that was taking off. Planning for the exercise took six months. Ninety role players served as injured at the site.

VERNON, CT, DEC. 12—First-arriving personnel found a four-and-a-half-story, heavy wood timber mill structure well-involved. The fire quickly intensified and threatened adjacent structures and residences. Downed service wires, recent snowfall and freezing temperatures impeded operations. The fire quickly went to four-plus alarms. Flying debris affected the adjacent Hockanum River and nearby neighborhoods. A regional Task Force activation was enacted. The main operation lasted about 24 hours.

OLEAN, NY, DEC. 12—Firefighters responded to a reported structure fire, with flames and smoke showing. Engine 41 arrived within three minutes of the dispatch and reported heavy smoke and fire showing. The crew stretched a 1¾-inch handline to the front door. Engine 40’s crew secured a hydrant and provided a water feed. Crews performed a rapid interior attack, which confined the fire to the apartment of origin.

SPRING VALLEY, CA, DEC. 25—Crews arrived to heavy smoke and fire showing from a two-story apartment building with reports of people trapped. No one was found inside, but one dog was killed. Fourteen fire apparatus and approximately 45 fire personnel quickly brought the fire under control. The fire started from a Christmas tree in a downstairs apartment.
