Community Rallies to Help Hammonton, NJ, Firefighters who Lost Home to Blaze

Longtime Hammonton Firefighter Domenick DiGiovannangelo said the support from colleagues has been awesome.

A New Jersey community and their fire companies are rallying to support a longtime firefighter who lost his home to flames.

I just thank God that my family got out. My dogs are safe, my kids are safe. We lost everything, but I have them. God blessed us," veteran Hammonton Firefighter Domenick DiGiovannangelo told NBC10.

One of his two firefighting sons responded to assist with the operation at his family home.

Cameron DiGivonnangelo explained: “It was kind of like a call to action in a sense. I'd rather do that than do nothing and just watch the house burn away. All I can say is I had the support of my entire company behind me.”

Cameron moved out of the house a few months ago.

His father, his wife and two of their children are alive after getting a call from a neighbor alerting them about the fire.

“If it weren’t for the neighbor and God’s hand we wouldn’t have gotten out," he said.

Fellow firefighters and residents have already reached out to help.

"It was almost instantaneous. As soon as we got back to the firehouse from fighting the fire, we started thinking about how we can help them," said John Warren, President of Hammonton Independent Vol. Fire Co. 2.

While the cause remains under investigation, firefighters believe it started on an outside porch and spread.
