Around 250 firefighters battled a raging Nassau County recycling plant fire Wednesday morning.
The blaze began shortly after 2 a.m. at the Crown Recycling Facility in Calverton, according to News 12 Long Island.
Riverhead Fire Chief Piotr Kurzyna told the outlet that teams from 35 departments worked to extinguish the flames that engulfed the building.
The situation was declared “under control” at 11:20 a.m., after roughly nine hours of firefighting efforts, according to Riverhead Local. The outlet quoted a fire official saying the scorched structure was “gone.”
At least one firefighter was injured while battling the blaze, Kurzyna said. The extent of those injuries and what caused them wasn’t immediately reported.
As of Wednesday afternoon, it also remained unclear what started the massive fire.
Area residents were advised to close doors and windows to avoid inhaling potentially toxic air. The family-owned plant has specialized in “recycling scrap metal, solid waste disposal, and demolition debris” for 35 years on Long Island, according to its website.
