Heavy fire was blowing out windows when Bangor firefighters came up on the Main Street church.
"The rear of the structure has already collapsed. The roof has collapsed, the second floor has collapsed. So there is major damage to the structure," Assistant Fire Chief Todd Albert told NBC10.
Albert said that the fire may have started in the area where the kitchen and boiler are located, at the back of the church.
"The rear of the structure is a total loss. The front part of the church, the original stone, is probably salvageable."
The fire remains under investigation.
