Towers at a decommissioned power plant collapsed during a massive blaze Sunday.

Texas City Fire Captain Jason Grimm told KHOU an old cooling tower at the plant caught fire and collapsed. A second tower also caught fire, followed by a third.

The plant’s cooling towers were made mostly of wood, contributing to rapid collapse as they burned.

No nearby structures caught fire although embers were blown into communities.

Nothing toxic was found during air monitoring by Galveston County Health Department and the Centers for Toxicology and Environmental Health. But people with respiratory issues were advised to avoid smoke.

There was no power entering or leaving the plant, and no natural gas supply on site, Grimm said.

The cause is under investigation.

Firefighters from 10 departments were involved in the operation.
