A fire that broke out early Thursday at a Southfield apartment building has displaced 27 people and two dogs, officials said.
Two of the building's residents were taken by medics to a hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation, they said. No other injuries among the residents or firefighters were reported, authorities said.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, officials said.
Southfield firefighters were called at about 2:44 a.m. Thursday to a four-story apartment building at 23105 Providence Drive near Nine Mile and Greenfield roads, Fire Chief Joey Thorington said in a statement.
Fire crews arrived, found smoke coming from the front of the building, and began attacking the flames while simultaneously evacuating residents, according to authorities.
Thorington said firefighters summoned additional manpower due to the incident's complexity. Firefighters from Royal Oak, Birmingham, Madison Heights, Ferndale, and Bloomfield Township later arrived to assist, he said.
The chief also said crews operated under adverse winter weather conditions and performed exceptionally under difficult circumstances.
Once the fire was extinguished, firefighters determined all four of the building's floors were affected by the flames, three apartments were significantly damaged, and five others had minor damage, officials said.
Thorington said his department is working with the American Red Cross to help displaced residents find temporary housing.
Thursday's fire is Southfield's second in the last two days.
On Tuesday, a woman died in a house fire near Nine Mile and Telegraph roads. Three others were injured.
