Nov. 25--VALLEY GLEN -- Firefighters had to use the "Jaws of Life" to cut a man out of a BMW after it collided with a bus Friday morning.
The crash happened shortly after 9 a.m. Friday in the 12600 block of Sherman Way.
Initial reports indicated that a black BMW sedan crashed into the bus as it was traveling on Sherman Way. According to witnesses, the sedan became tangled under the passenger side of the bus.
A second car, a Scion hatchback, was caught in the mess and severely damaged as well.
Firefighters used the "Jaws of Life" to free the driver of the BMW, working for nearly a half hour before he was extracted from the wreckage, Los Angeles Fire Department battalion chief Peter Benesh said.
"It was a tough challenge for us to do that," Benesh said, noting that Search and Rescue team members were brought in for assistance. "He was pretty well jammed in there."
According to LAFD spokesman Brian Humphrey, the man was taken to a local hospital where he was listed in critical condition.
A patient in the Scion was also taken to a local hospital in critical condition.
Four people aboard the bus were injured. Three were treated on scene with minor injuries and another was taken to a hospital for chest pains.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
