Nov. 17--VIRGINIA BEACH -- Firefighters this afternoon rescued an injured construction worker trapped in a ditch.
About 3:50 p.m., dispatch received a report that a pipe had struck a construction worker at the intersection of Crimson Holly Lane and Lynnhaven Parkway, causing injuries that trapped him in a 14-foot-deep ditch, said Battalion Chief Ken Pravetz, a Fire Department spokesman.
The Fire Department's Technical Rescue Team, which trains for complex rescue situations, responded, hoisting the man out with a wire basket and haul system, Pravetz said. The rescue took about 30 minutes, he said.
Medics transported the worker to Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital for treatment for head and leg injuries, Pravetz said. He was conscious and not seriously hurt, he said.
