Nov. 11--MILWAUKIE -- A man was buried in a 16-foot-deep trench today after a truck ran into the trench, trapping him under an avalanche of dirt.
The man, whose name was not available, was taken to OHSU Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Steve McAdoo, Clackamas Fire District 1 spokesman, said the accident was reported at 11:14 a.m. at Southeast Sandview Street and Bell Avenue, east of Milwaukie. McAdoo said arriving firefighters were able to free the man relatively quickly, then pull him from the trench.
Dispatchers said the call was relayed to them from a non-emergency line called by the victim's employers, S2 Construction Inc. The company, based in Bedford, Pa., excavated the trench through a construction contract with Clackamas County.
Firefighters, concerned that the man may have been trapped longer than necessary in a potentially life-threatening situation, have alerted Oregon Occupation and Safety Health Division to trigger an investigation.
S2 Construction could not be reached for comment.
