Oct. 10--Two volunteer firefighters in Levittown, arriving on the scene before their own fire engine, helped pull a woman from a burning house on Bobolink Lane Monday afternoon, fire officials said.

The woman was taken to Nassau University Medical Center, where she was in the burn center and in extremely critical condition, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Deputy Chief Chris Behrens of the Levittown Fire Department said the fire was reported at 2 p.m. and that units from his department and the East Meadow Fire Department responded. But two of his firefighters -- Chris Tuohy and Lionel Roseval -- went directly to the scene from their homes and arrived before the fire engines.

The two and an unidentified neighbor brought the woman to safety, the chief said.

He said the fire started in a second-floor bedroom and that the fire marshal was investigating the cause. "After they got the woman out, the house just lit up," Behrens said.

A man who lives across the street said neighbors helped the arriving firefighters carry the woman from the building. "Thank God for the volunteer firefighters," the man said. He said he was not one of the rescuers and did not want to be identified by name.
