DAVIE, Fla.
--
A crash sparked a fiery situation at a Davie gas station Thursday afternoon.
The incident occurred at a Chevron station at the corner of U.S. 441 and Griffin Road.
Detectives said Carlos Puente, 46, was driving a white Ford Mustang when he was pulled over for having a questionable license plate on Oakes Road and U.S. 441.
He tried driving away from the officers by performing a U-turn and heading south towards Griffin Road.
The officers did not pursue him, but Puente lost control while trying to cut through the gas station parking lot, said investigators.
He crashed into two other cars, which caught fire and some gas pumps exploded.
Firefighters used foam to extinguish the flames.
"This whole place could have blown up," said witness Zamir Villeda.
Jake Edwards, who was driving with his family, said he could see the thick, black smoke from a mile away. He shot home video as they approached the scene.
"It was frightening," said Edwards.
Puente hid in the bushes nearby but was later caught. He is charged with driving on a suspending license.
Other charges, including eluding police, are pending.
U.S. 441 was closed in the area.
No injuries were reported.
