Sept. 17--WILLINGTON -- Two tractor-trailer drivers were injured on Friday when their trucks crashed on I-84, igniting a fire and shutting down the eastbound lanes near Exit 70 for several hours, state police said.
One person was taken by Life Star helicopter to Hartford Hospital with serious injuries, state police said. A second person was taken by ambulance to Rockville General Hospital.
The crash happened at about 3:30 p.m. State police said that when they arrived, one of the tractor-trailers was engulfed in flames.
Dennis Schain, a spokesman for the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, said that truck was carrying 64-ounce containers of olive oil, which had leaked into the nearby Roaring Brook. DEEP crews were called to the area Friday night to assist with the clean-up efforts.
The highway was expected to be closed, between exits 70 and 71, until 2 or 3 a.m., state police said.
