ELBERT COUNTY, Colo. --
A horse named Summer was rescued Monday afternoon after she fell through a window well and into a basement.
"I was trying to enjoy my morning cup of coffee, when I heard this crash outside," said Tatiana Golter. "The horse had fallen halfway into the window well, and before I could get a rope, she had slid in the rest of the way."
The home does not have a walk-out basement and the stairwell leading to the upper floors was not an option for the rescue because of the size and weight of the animal.
Veterinarians sedated the horse as crews dug out the dirt around the window well. The horse was then able to walk out.
She fell into the home, located at 9151 Sun Country Drive, just after 9 a.m. and was pulled out around 2 p.m.
Summer received some scrapes from the fall through the glass window at the bottom of the well, but is doing well.
Golter thought the horse probably stepped on the Plexiglas cover over the well and broke through.
Emergency crews from the Elbert County Sheriffs Office and the Rattlesnake Fire Protection District were helped by crews from the Elbert County Road and Bridge Department and the Miller Coring Company.
