LOWELL, Mass.
--
A very tight squeeze led to a dramatic rescue in Lowell Saturday afternoon.
The Lowell Fire Department said it took firefighters one hour to free 3-year-old Kyle Marks after the toddler put his arm in a hole in the floor where a radiator used to sit.
"We tried cooking oil, we tried Pam, soap and water. His arm was too swollen to come out on its own," said his father Lawrence Marks.
Lowell firefighters brought in saws and crowbars and cut out a section of the floor to get Kyle's arm out of the floor in his apartment.
"It was extremely hard to extricate him. We had to cut the floor and cut the ceiling in the apartment below him," said Lowell fire Lt. Larry LeDoux. "We had to do it very slowly, because any movement of the wood was pinching his arm.
"Several times we told the landlord about covering the hole, but he neglected to do it," said Lawrence Marks.
The landlord declined comment. Neighbors cheered when Kyle was freed and taken to the hospital to be checked.
