HOUSTON --
A man died after he and his wife were pulled from their burning home early Friday.
The fire broke out at a home on Love Street near Conroy Street about 1 a.m.
Neighbors said they tried to rush in and save the 84-year-old man and 82-year-old woman, but burglar bars on the front windows caused problems.
Houston firefighters cut through the bars and pulled the couple out of the home. The woman was in the living room and the man was in a back bedroom, investigators said.
The man and woman were taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital for treatment. Officials said the man died at the hospital and the woman was in critical condition. Their names have not been released.
The fire may have started in the garage and spread to the home, detectives said.
"Both garage doors were down, but we had fire already burning through the tops of the doors there," Capt. Billy Martin said. "Just heavy smoke throughout the rest of the house."
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
