SACRAMENTO, Calif.
--
A woman and her 5-month-old child were pulled from the side of a levee near the Sacramento River on Wednesday afternoon during a daring rescue attempt, city fire crews said.
Witnesses told KCRA 3 the woman was pushing a stroller carrying her daughter on a bike path that runs along the Sacramento River at R and Front streets.
At about 3 p.m., the woman lost control of the stroller, which started to roll down the side of the levee.
The woman and her fiancé, who was also walking along the bike path, ran after the stroller in an attempt to keep the 5-month-old from going into the river.
Fire crews said the woman was able to grab the stroller just as it reached the water.
The mother injured her ankle during the rescue attempt and had to be pulled from the side of the levee by firefighters. The child, who received minor scrapes, was pulled from knee-deep water, Sacramento City fire crews said.
The woman was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
