ATLANTA --
A fire evacuated about 125 guests from of a downtown Atlanta hotel on Monday morning, firefighters said.
The fire started inside an empty room of the Holiday Inn on Andrew Young International Boulevard at 2 a.m., according to officials.
The fire was contained to a heating and cooling unit on the third floor, but firefighters said it caused extensive smoke and water damage.
"We did have some smoke all the way up to the fifth floor and some water from the sprinkler system that leaked down to the second and first floor" said Atlanta fire Battalion Chief David Rhodes.
Hotel guests were evacuated and lined the sidewalk of the hotel, just a block from Centennial Olympic Park.
"I walked out of the room and there was smoke everywhere. It was ridiculous," hotel guest Brittney Liverett told Channel 2s Kerry Kavanaugh.
Hotel guests Leslie ray and Adrian Thomas told Kavanaugh they just returned to the hotel as firefighters arrived. "We're just hoping our property is not water damaged" said Ray.
Paramedics took one hotel employee to the hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.
