Oregon Apartment Fire Displaces 50 People

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Two apartments were destroyed Sunday afternoon in a fire that also killed a dog, firefighters say. At 2:56 p.m., Portland Fire and Rescue crews were dispatched to building at 2346 NW Glisan Street. Firefighters say heavy smoke and flames were seen coming from a fourth floor apartment. When crews made entry, they found the heavy flames coming from a third floor unit, officials say. The fire spread to the fourth floor unit before crews were able to put out the blaze.

Two apartments were destroyed Sunday afternoon in a fire that also killed a dog, firefighters say.

At 2:56 p.m., Portland Fire and Rescue crews were dispatched to building at 2346 NW Glisan Street.

Firefighters say heavy smoke and flames were seen coming from a fourth floor apartment. When crews made entry, they found the heavy flames coming from a third floor unit, officials say.

The fire spread to the fourth floor unit before crews were able to put out the blaze.

It took crews nearly an hour to control the fire. Officials say no residents were hurt. One renter's pet dog died in the fire.

Firefighters say the most extensive damage was contained to the third floor unit and the fourth floor unit. Investigators are on scene trying to figure out what caused the fire.

A spokesperson for the fire bureau says everyone in the apartment building was able to evacuate quickly and safely.

Because of the heavy smoke damage, crews have determined the building is uninhabitable. Approximately 50 people will have to find a new place to stay for the night. The American Red Cross has dispatched an emergency crew to the scene. A shelter is now opened at the Congregation Shaarie Torah Synagogue located at 920 NW 25th Avenue for residents affected by the fire.
