MILWAUKEE --

The same Milwaukee engine company rescued five people during two fires Monday.

The first fire broke out at an apartment complex near 13th Street and Edgerton Avenue.

Firefighters found a 73-year-old woman in the unit where the fire started. She was in critical condition Monday night.

Firefighters said they rescued two other people from second-floor windows.

Then Monday afternoon, another fire broke out at a home near 23rd and Bolivar streets.

The same ladder company rescued a mother and daughter from their second-floor porch.

"When you dedicate an entire crew to taking people down on ladders, it costs you resources, but they were very efficient, very aggressive," said Batallion Chief Ralph Gallow.

One person was hospitalized in the second fire for smoke inhalation.

Investigations are under way into what caused both fires.
