WESTBROOK, Conn. --
A multimillion-dollar Westbrook home was destroyed in a Tuesday evening fire, fire officials said.
Crews were called to a home on Captain's Drive at about 7 p.m.
Dozens of firefighters were called to battle the blaze, including some on boats since the property is near the water.
No one was home at the time of the fire and no injuries were reported.
"Thought we saw a barbecue gone awry," said witness Jackie Squeglia. "Saw more smoke."
Fire officials are calling the $1.9 million home a total loss. The cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
On Wednesday, officials warned residents in the area that their water may have been compromised. Salt water, which was being pumped in from Long Island Sound to fight the blaze, somehow back-flowed into the water system. Connecticut Water was busy flushing out the system.
The 250 property owners were given the notice about the water issue and fresh water was being provided to residents until the all clear is given.
