Honolulu firefighters scrambled Friday afternoon to keep a brush fire from threatening homes in the Kalaheo area on Oahu's Windward side.
The fire was reported just before 1 p.m.
The three-alarm fire burned an area of brush between Kalaheo High School and homes.
"When we first arrived, the fire was running, the wind was blowing -- so there was a lot of flames when we first arrived. After about 10 minutes, it really died down. So, it helped us stop the spread of the fire right now," Capt. Kenison Tejada said.
Some homeowners watered down their houses and yards with garden hoses, while the fire department's helicopter dropped water from the air.
Authorities closed part of Iliaina Street so fire hoses could safely stretch across the street.
No homes were damaged and no one was evacuated.
