2 Wildfires Burn In Nebraska, Iowa

Winds gusting above 50 mph snapped a power line and created a spark.

Firefighters worked to control two separate wildfires in the Omaha area.

Flames devoured grass, trees and buildings outside Minneola, Iowa.

A second fire burned in Washington County, Neb., near Kennard.

The Kennard fire apparently started when winds gusting above 50 mph snapped a power line and created a spark. It burned about a mile down a fence line toward a barn filled with hay. Six departments were at the scene fighting the fire. The barn is not damaged, but the hay stored there burned up.

Officials in Minneola said a similar power line malfunction started the blaze. It burned a cornfield and was fueled by the high winds. At least 30 acres burned before it reached a wooded area where several abandoned farm buildings stand. The fire jumped several gravel roads and crossed a creek before firefighters were able to get it under control. Four departments helped the effort to extinguish the fire.

No one was injured.
