Nebraska Wildfires Rage On
Firefighters are battling two enormous wildfires and they've managed to keep the flames out of the northwest Nebraska town of Harrison.
On Sunday night, fire officials came up with an evacuation plan in case the winds shifted. They did move as forecasters predicted, but no evacuation was ordered. One home north of town, a bed and breakfast, was destroyed.
Emergency crews said that 80,000 to 90,000 acres have burned in Sioux and Dawes County near Harrison and Chadron.
Gov. Dave Heineman visited the region twice over the weekend. He also visited with one of three families in Chadron who lost their homes.
"The other night, we watched this one and we could just watch the big yellow flames come up. They looked like they were as high as those trees," said Fred Hagman who lost his home.
Heineman is expected to send 50 more National Guard soldiers from Lincoln on Monday to fight the fires.
He said that eventually 1,200 firefighters and 300 other state employees will be working on the fire.
Firefighters said they are worried that Monday's 100-degree temperatures could bring the fires out of control again.
