Firefighters have finally gotten an upper hand on a a raging brush fire on Oahu's Leeward coast.

The blaze at Yokohoma Bay started at about 10:30 p.m. Wednesday. So far, it has scorched more than 1,000 acres, according to Honolulu Fire Department spokesman Capt. Kenison Tejada.

HFD said crews contained the fire at about 6:30 p.m. Thursday.

Firefighters have worked to keep the fire away from an U.S. Air Force satellite tracking station at Kaena Point.

Emergency crews evacuated the AT&T building a quarter-mile up from Keawaula Bay.

The fire is not threatening any homes, officials said.

HFD's Air 1 and two military helicopters joined the fight from the air. Officials plan to conduct an aerial survey of the site on Friday.

There has been no word yet on what started the fire.

Residents on Oahu's Leeward side are bracing for a summer brush fire season that could be more intense this year because of foliage growth after the March's rainstorms.
