California Wildfire Scorches 2,200 Acres

As of Monday night, more than 300 crew members were helping out.

KERNVILLE, Calif. --

A fire that started behind a market in Kernville on Sunday afternoon has scorched more than 2,200 acres, according to Kern County Fire Department officials.

Crews said the fire started just before 3 p.m. behind the James Station Market on Sierra Way. Within 90 minutes, more than 100 firefighters were using airtankers, helicopters and firetrucks to fight the flames. As of Monday night, more than 300 crew members were helping out.

Wind and difficult terrain created problems for fire crews, and the blaze has spread to more than 2,200 acres. The flames are now slightly northeast of Kernville, approaching the Cannell Trail.

The fire threatened nearby structures, and crews warned nearby Kernville residents to take precautions for their homes and businesses. No significant damage or injuries have been reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Anyone with information should call the Kern County Fire Department at 661-391-7000.
