Fire crews battled a wildfire Monday in Elkins, started when high winds caused burning trash to burn out of control, authorities said.

Firefighters were called to Mount Olive Road at about 1 p.m. Seven fire departments battled for about an hour to contain the blaze.

Authorities said it's not a good idea to burn trash outside right now.

"Right now, there's not a burn ban because the moisture we've had -- all the rain and snow. There's not a burn ban because the ground is saturated with water, but what's on top is dry, and the wind today is going to be a contributing factor," said Elkins Fire Department spokesman J.D. Demotte.

A helicopter was dispatched from Benton County so crews could get a better idea of where the fire was spreading.

The man who was burning trash was issued a ticket, police said.
