ROOSEVELT, Wash. (AP)-- Firefighters worked Saturday to contain a wildfire that threatened homes as it burned about 650 acres four miles north of this Columbia River town in Klickitat County.
Fire officials evacuated 20 people from 15 homes that were threatened, according to a release from Washington State Patrol.
''The evacuations were just a safety measure,'' State Patrol spokesman Greg Pressel told Northwest Cable News.
The fire began around 1:30 p.m. Saturday and was burning in an area of mostly farmland, where there were few homes around, Pressel said.
Its cause was under investigation.
About 62 firefighters have been sent to the fire, and 10 engines, two water tenders and a helicopter are assisting.
Pressel said fire lines dug around the threatened homes appeared to be holding Saturday night.
