Firefighters were kept busy Wednesday with several fires that ignited across the county.

A tiny fire scorched 25 square feet of grass about two miles south of Ragged Point, said Johnathan Gibson, a CDF/County Fire engineer stationed in Cambria. Gibson said the fire, which began at 1:15 p.m., was started by a campfire blown out of control by strong winds. The blaze was out 30 minutes later.

In the North County, a vehicle that may have overheated appears to have caused a 24-acre grass fire in the area of Pozo and Parkhill roads about 4:30 p.m., CDF spokesman Clint Bullard said. The fire was surrounded by 6:30 p.m., and crews were expected to be working late into the night clearing it up. Bullard said one person suffered a small injury, perhaps trying to combat the blaze, but he did not have further details.

Ten minutes after that fire was contained, another was spotted by neighbors and drivers along Highway 101 outside San Miguel on the front porch of a mobile home.

The woman who lived at 220 San Marcos Road was unaware of the blaze until firefighters knocked on her door, CDF spokesman Mike Cole said, and she and her daughter escaped unhurt.

Crews sent from the San Miguel Fire Department managed to put out the fire before it was able to take off, Cole said.

Several other engines also were sent to help, and a helicopter and air tanker plane arrived with water and fire retardant.

Crews surrounded that fire by 7:25 p.m., Cole said, after it had burned about 7 acres. He said the fire began accidentally on the porch and did no damage to the house itself.
