Firefighters Put Out Forest Fire Near Athens, Greece City Center

Firefighters aided by airplanes and a helicopter managed to extinguish a small forest fire Wednesday near the center of Athens, the fire department said.

ATHENS, Greece (AP) -- Firefighters aided by airplanes and a helicopter managed to extinguish a small forest fire Wednesday near the center of Athens, the fire department said.

The fire in one of the capital's few forested areas broke out in the eastern district of Vyronas and involved 15 fire trucks, 45 firefighters, two aircraft and a helicopter.

The fire did not threaten any homes or businesses in the area, the fire department said. It was unclear what caused the fire.
