``Everything seems to be working our way,'' said Dorothy Harvey, a Bureau of Land Management spokeswoman for the Nickel fire in Nevada. ``The wind really cooperated with us yesterday, and it did get windy last night but the lines held.''
She said 472 firefighters and five helicopters made rapid progress Monday, getting the fire 90 percent contained after starting the day with 20 percent containment.
Harvey said 8,300 acres, or almost 13 square miles, had been charred in rugged pinon and juniper pine forests.
The fire started with a lightning strike late Wednesday and jumped fire breaks Sunday about 12 miles south of Mesquite, spreading east into Arizona.
No homes or structures were immediately threatened, and no injuries were reported, Harvey said.
A large wilderness area remained closed Tuesday _ bound by Mesquite and Interstate 15, the Virgin River, Lake Mead and the Arizona border.
