SUNFLOWER, Ariz. (AP) -- Helicopters and air tankers pummeled the Tonto National Forest's Diamond Fire on Tuesday, and firefighters expected full containment Wednesday, a spokeswoman said.
The fire had burned 1,150 acres and was 65 percent contained as of Tuesday morning. No further estimates were available as of mid-afternoon.
``We're hitting it really hard with our air power,'' said Tonto spokeswoman Emily Garber. ``There's very little smoke any more.''
Four single-engine air tankers and five helicopters attacked the fire, she said. ``We've been dumping a lot of water on it from the helicopters, with the idea of actually getting it out once and for all.''
On Sunday, when the blaze began, burning mainly grass and chaparral, it moved to within a quarter-mile of Sunflower, a tiny community of some 20 homes located about 50 miles northeast of Phoenix.
But it was not threatening Sunflower, authorities said.
Garber said investigators believe the fire was caused by people.
