Visitors arriving at the park in time for the Labor Day weekend will be allowed to travel on the road only during three-hour periods in the morning and evening and must follow other restrictions, such as a 25-mph speed limit. Some places are still smoldering, fire-weakened trees line the road and firefighters continue to stamp out hot spots.
Fire information officer Peter Frenzen said the entrance could be closed again if the wildfires kick up. But the efforts of firefighters over the past few days and better weather conditions have made that unlikely, he said.
The entrance had been closed for most of the last two weeks because of two wildfires that have burned 23,500 acres. The fire is 65 percent contained, and Frenzen said the 700 firefighters there could begin demobilizing Saturday.
All Yellowstone attractions and services have remained open.
In Montana, about two dozen families in Martin City were able to return to their homes Thursday, a day after strong winds blew embers from a fire across a reservoir.
