June 01--An extra-alarm fire that spread among four buildings was deemed "suspicious" by Chicago Fire Department investigators.
The fire started about 4:30 a.m. in the 8900 block of South Commercial Avenue on the Southeast Side and soon spread to neighboring buildings.
Extra alarms were soon called and crews worked for 90 minutes before the alarms were struck out.
The fire sent low-hanging smoke north through the neighborhood and was visible for miles from the expressway leading into the neighborhood.
The Chicago Police Department's Bomb & Arson unit is now investigating the fire.
One woman was taken in good condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center, a Chicago Fire Department spokesman said.
She jumped from a second-floor window after the fire started and was found in the alley by police.
