Hands-on Training: Realistic Training and Teamwork Provides a One-of-a-Kind Experience
Source Firehouse Staff
One of the most popular and exciting ways to learn at trade shows is hands-on training. It provides the opportunity to learn from top regional instructors. Nothing is more invigorating and challenging than spending the day working through real-life scenarios and depending on one another to accomplish the training at hand. The hands-on training scenarios help firefighters learn new skills, improve on existing skills and provide the opportunity to learn from others outside their department.
At this year’s Firehouse Expo, hands-on training is being held on July 14 and 15. Supported by the Baltimore City Fire Department and other surrounding departments, the training ranges from Burning Down the (Doll’s) House—a class where small-scale props are used to demonstrate fire development, flashover, backdraft and the influence of flow path on fire behavior—to Heavy Rescue: Overturns and Underrides, where students will learn the safest and most-efficient tools and techniques for heavy lifting and stabilization of big rigs involved in collisions with smaller vehicles.
Of course, there will also be live-fire scenarios. Two of the three workshops will be held at the Baltimore City Fire Training Academy,. Live Fire – Basement Fire Operations focuses on the execution of essential strategic and tactical tasks critical to safely combating these complex and hazardous incidents. Live Fire – Bread & Butter Boot Camp consists of realistic hands-on training, some of which will be under live-fire conditions, and emphasizes skills utilized on the fireground that most firefighters have not mastered or have never employed.
To produce the best training experience, Firehouse has teamed up with the Baltimore City Fire Department and surrounding departments to provide the appropriate venues for six classes, with student to instructor ratios that support the most effective learning possible. Because we have limited the maximum number of students we are asking that you register early so we can confirm the appropriate number of instructors for each class. The registration deadline for hands-on training is June 1.
