Roof Collapses During AZ Supermarket Blaze

July 12, 2018
The three-alarm fire consumed the Safeway store in north Phoenix that firefighters were able to evacuate before the roof collapsed.

A massive multiple alarm blaze is burning through a north Phoenix supermarket Wednesday evening.

Phoenix Fire Department spokesperson Rob McDade toldAZFamily.com that the fire started in a storage area at the rear of the Safeway about 6 p.m.

Workers and customers were evacuated by firefighters before they transitioned to a defensive attack, McDade told 12News.com. The blaze caused the roof to collapse, as seen in this tweet:

McDade said the fire reached three alarms and firefighters are being rotated through the fireground because of the conditions.

No injuries were reported.

The fire broke out as a powerful storm hit the Phoenix area, and 12News reported that area streets were flooded by the rain water and runoff from the blaze.

Local media reported that the fire was eerily similar to the 2001 Southwest Supermarket fire that claimed the life of Phoenix firefighter Bret Tarver
