Aug. 14 -- A truck that crashed into a pizzeria sparked a fire that destroyed it and heavily damaged other buildings late Monday in Frenchtown, N.J., authorities said.

Frenchtown Mayor Brad Myhre posted a statement on the borough’s website saying, “Tonight our community was devastated by a terrible fire which was caused by a truck plowing through the front of Galasso’s Pizzeria. Most of the Galasso’s building is now rubble and the Frenchtown Cafe located beside the pizzeria has also suffered significant damage.”

Myhre praised the work of Frenchtown firefighters and those of other Hunterdon County departments that responded.

Myhre’s statement said a number of people have been displaced from their homes, though the number was unclear Tuesday morning.

Fundraising efforts are being spearheaded by the Frenchtown United Methodist Church, which has set up a GoFundMe page to assist those affected. More than $5,580 had already been raised by 10 a.m. Tuesday.

The Hunterdon County prosecutor's ofice says the cause and origin of the blaze are under investigation.
