TX Crews Battle Large Apartment Blaze

Oct. 24, 2018
It took about 90 firefighters several hours to bring a dangerous fire under control at an apartment complex in Dallas on Tuesday afternoon.

Oct. 23 -- A fire has displaced residents of a Lakewood apartment complex blocks from White Rock Lake, fire officials say.

The blaze broke out about 3:45 p.m. Tuesday at The Bluffs of Lakewood in the 7500 block of East Grand Avenue, near Garland Road and Gaston Avenue, Dallas Fire-Rescue spokesman Jason Evans said.

Smoke and flames could be seen coming through the roof of the three-story building as about 90 firefighters worked to bring the four-alarm fire under control. It was extinguished in a couple of hours, he said.

Many of the residents got themselves out before fire crews arrived, and no injuries have been reported, Evans said.

Fire, smoke and water damage made at least 33 units uninhabitable and displaced an unknown number of residents, Evans said.

The American Red Cross was called to assist, and apartment management was working to find housing for the tenants at other units on site and at sister properties.

The cause of the fire has not been determined.

Fire trucks blocked lanes of traffic in both directions on East Grand Avenue while crews fought the fire.
