Michigan firefighters were caught in the middle of a shootout between individuals in two vehicles Thursday while responding to a small oven fire at a home.
The incident happened just after 1 p.m. when Flint firefighters were on a call about a structure fire, Battalion Chief Mark Kovach told MLive. That's when two vehicles sped toward the home, with gunfire being exchanged between them.
Kovach said he didn't hear the shooting, but other firefighters radioed him and told him to immediately leave the home. Instead, he followed one of the vehicles after another had stopped.
“I’m fine. They’re not shooting at me. They’re just shooting near me,” Kovach told MLive. “I just wanted to give dispatch an idea of travel, so they could dispatch police in the right direction.”
No firefighters were hurt in the gunplay, and no fire apparatus or equipment was damaged. Kovach said he believed authorities caught up with one of the vehicles.
“Not the most unusual thing to happen, just the most unusual for today," he told MLive.
