About 70 Firefighters Battle Dallas Apartment Fire

March 4, 2019
Flames erupted through the two-story building early Monday, and it took crews a few hours to put out the blaze.

Dallas Fire-Rescue crews battled a fire at an apartment building in northeast Dallas early Monday morning.

The fire was reported just before 5:30 a.m. in the 7200 block of Holly Hill Lane, near Greenville Avenue and Walnut Hill Lane. 9-1-1 callers said flames were shooting through the roof of a two-story apartment building, Dallas Fire-Rescue spokesman Jason Evans said.

About 70 firefighters were called to the scene, and fire was extinguished within a few hours.

Half of the apartment building's 16 units were damaged by smoke, fire or water, Evans said. He said it's unknown how many residents were displaced due to the damage, but the American Red Cross was called out to assist them.

Live video at the scene from KXAS-TV (NBC 5) showed clouds of smoke and a large emergency response before the sun was up.

Evans said fire investigators believe the fire started in a second-floor unit and traveled to the ceiling space, where it spread.

The cause of the fire is still undetermined, as serious damage to the building "made it unsafe to conduct a more thorough internal investigation," Evans said in an email.

No residents or firefighters were injured.
