Two NJ Firefighters Hurt Fighting Two-Alarm Fire

The blaze Sunday, which took crews about an hour to control, was the second multi-alarm fire at a vacant or abandoned building in Jersey City in less than a week.

A Jersey City firefighter and a battalion chief were injured battling a two-alarm blaze on Clinton Avenue Sunday afternoon, authorities said.

The fire was reported at approximately 4:30 p.m. at what appeared to a vacant or abandoned building at 241 Clinton and quickly went to a second alarm.

The blaze caused damage to the building next door, which was occupied, Jersey City spokeswoman Kimberly Wallace-Scalcione said.

A firefighter suffered steam burns to his leg and a battalion chief was also injured. Details on the battalion chief’s injuries were not immediately available.

The fire was placed under control at 5:30 p.m. Information on the cause was not immediately available.

The American Red Cross is helping residents who have been displaced, Wallace-Scalcione said.

This is the second multi-alarm fire at a vacant or abandoned building in Jersey City in less than a week. On Monday, a three-alarm blaze broke out at a building on Jordan Avenue. It is believed that squatters were living in that building.
