FDNY Firefighters Save Three from Brownstone Blaze

Crews rescued the people after they became trapped on the third and fourth floors of a burning Harlem building Sunday.

Firefighters rescued three people from a dramatic blaze in a Harlem brownstone Sunday morning.

The fire, which started just before 11:15 a.m. on the third-floor of a four-story building on W. 130th St. at Malcolm X. Blvd., sent heavy smoke pouring through the windows.

Firefighter Nicholas Foley of Ladder 30 was one of the first smoke eaters to respond to the blaze. He saw one victim at a fourth-floor window, and climbed up an aerial ladder to make the save, an FDNY spokesman said.

Firefighters from Foley’s ladder company saved a second person on the third floor, bringing the victim down the stairs, the spokesman said.

They soon realized that a third person was still stuck in the back of the brownstone’s fourth floor. Foley brought the victim to the window, but couldn’t use a ladder or rescue rope, so they waited for firefighters inside to clear a path to the stairs.

All three victims suffered minor injuries and were taken to Harlem Hospital, the spokesman said

The building also houses a church on its first floor.

The cause of the blaze remained under investigation Sunday.
