MA Man Accidentally Sets Swimming Pool on Fire

Springfield firefighters used foam to put out the pool blaze after a man's gas can caught fire trying to burn sticks and leaves in a fire pit Monday.

SPRINGFIELD, MAFirefighters had to use foam to extinguish a fire in an above-ground swimming pool Monday in the Forest Park neighborhood.

A resident of 85 Castle St. was trying to burn sticks and leaves in a fire pit and used gasoline to light the fire. The fire flashed back and caught his gas can on fire, said Dennis Leger, executive aide to Fire Commissioner Bernard J. Calvi.

He then threw the burning can into a nearby above-ground pool. The flaming gas then spread across the top of the water in the half-filled pool, creating a liquid fire, Leger said.

No one was injured in the fire that occurred shortly before 5 p.m. The pool was heavily damaged in the blaze, he said.
